How it works
Each food uses its glycemic index from the glycemic index chart and its available carbohydrate from USDA data. The meal’s glycemic load is the sum of each food’s load. Read more in glycemic index vs glycemic load.

Frequently asked questions
How is glycemic load calculated?
Glycemic load = glycemic index × grams of available carbohydrate ÷ 100. Available carbohydrate is total carbohydrate minus fiber.
What is a low glycemic load?
Per serving or meal: 10 or less is low, 11 to 19 is medium and 20 or more is high. Per day, under 80 is considered low and over 120 high.
Can I add up the glycemic load of several foods?
Yes. A meal’s glycemic load is the sum of each food’s load. It is an estimate: protein, fat and fiber in the meal can make the real response somewhat lower.
